Four Midwest states made the straight wall AR15 what it is today. Ohio and Iowa still write their gun season rules around these calibers. Michigan and Indiana have opened up to other cartridges, and plenty of hunters there are staying with straight wall for the reason the rules existed in the first place: flat country and shots inside 200 yards.

A straight wall cartridge has no shoulder. The case runs straight from base to bullet instead of necking down the way a 5.56 or .308 does. That shape carries a wide, heavy bullet at moderate speed.
The result hits hard at typical deer distances and runs out of energy sooner than a bottleneck rifle round. In flat, settled farm country that shorter reach is the point, which is why Midwest states that once allowed only shotgun slugs opened their gun seasons to straight wall rifles.
350 Legend, 400 Legend and 450 Bushmaster were all designed to fit the AR15. Change the barrel, match the bolt and magazine, and the rifle you already own is a deer rifle.
All three are proven on whitetails inside 200 yards. The difference is how much recoil you are willing to trade for energy.

Factory published figures from 20in test barrels: Winchester 350 Legend 150 gr, Winchester 400 Legend 215 gr, Hornady 450 Bushmaster 250 gr. Expect a little less velocity from a 16in barrel and noticeably less from 7.5in and 11.5in.
If you already own an AR15, a barrel is most of the way to a straight wall deer rifle. Your lower, buffer system, handguard, trigger and optic carry over. These are the parts that change.

Tier 1 Tactical is a rifle and suppressor maker based in Walford, Iowa, in the middle of straight wall country. Here is what goes into each barrel.
The rifling is formed by pulling a hardened button through the bore, which leaves a smooth, uniform finish. It is a method accuracy focused barrel makers have relied on for decades.
Takes weight off the barrel and adds surface area to shed heat, without giving up rigidity.
Nitride hardens the surface of the steel itself, bore included, so it resists wear and corrosion. Made for December weather.
9/16x24 on 350 Legend and 400 Legend, 11/16x24 on 450 Bushmaster. Run a brake or a suppressor.
Proven hands on in demanding conditions.
Tier 1 barrels are in use by a law enforcement department today. And Cody Curry of 110 SASS ran a Tier 1 Kratos through a 25,000 round endurance test. Watch it for yourself.

One page with the bolt, magazine and gas parts each caliber needs, plus 2026 season dates for Ohio, Iowa, Michigan and Indiana. We will also send one reminder before your state's order by date.
A cartridge with no shoulder. The case runs straight from base to bullet instead of necking down the way a 5.56 or .308 does. Straight wall cartridges fire wide, heavy bullets at moderate speed, so they hit hard at typical deer distances and lose energy sooner than a bottleneck rifle round. That shorter reach is why several Midwest states wrote them into their deer rules.
Ohio requires a straight wall cartridge from .357 to .515 caliber for rifles in its gun seasons. Iowa uses a bullet diameter rule (.350 to .500 inches with at least 500 foot pounds) in its youth, disabled hunter and shotgun seasons, which 350 Legend, 400 Legend and 450 Bushmaster all meet. Michigan dropped its limited firearms zone in 2026 and Indiana opened to most centerfire rifles in 2025, so straight wall is optional in both. Other states have their own zone and season rules, and some do not allow semiautomatic rifles for deer at all. Check your state's current regulations before you build.
Yes, if it is chambered for a legal straight wall cartridge such as 350 Legend, 400 Legend or 450 Bushmaster and loaded with no more than three rounds, chamber and magazine combined. A 5.56 AR15 is not legal for deer in Ohio.
Not in the youth, disabled hunter or shotgun seasons. Those seasons require an expanding bullet from .350 to .500 inches across. A barrel swap to 350 Legend, 400 Legend or 450 Bushmaster puts your AR15 inside the rule. Iowa's January antlerless season, where open, has its own list of legal rifles.
Yes. 350 Legend uses the same bolt face as 5.56, so your current bolt carrier group works. Use 350 Legend magazines for reliable feeding.
400 Legend uses a 6.8 SPC pattern bolt. 450 Bushmaster uses a larger bolt: a 450 Bushmaster bolt or a 458 SOCOM bolt. Those two are the same bolt, and the 458 SOCOM is the one you will see for sale most often. Both calibers need magazines made for them.
350 Legend and 400 Legend barrels have a .875 gas block journal. 450 Bushmaster barrels have a .936 journal. Gas tube length depends on the barrel: pistol length on the 7.5in barrels, carbine length on the 16in 350 Legend, the 16in 400 Legend and the 11.5in 450 Bushmaster, and mid length on the 16in 450 Bushmaster.
350 Legend has the lightest recoil, typically the lowest ammo cost, and it reuses your 5.56 bolt. 450 Bushmaster carries the most energy. 400 Legend sits between them: Winchester rates it at energy comparable to 450 Bushmaster with about 20% less recoil. All three are proven on whitetails inside 200 yards.
Each barrel is button rifled from 4150 CMV steel, cut with dimpled fluting and finished in nitride inside and out. Nitride hardens the surface of the steel itself.
Barrels under 16in are for AR pistol builds and registered short barreled rifles. Putting one on a rifle without federal registration is against the law. States also set their own rules for hunting with pistols and short barreled rifles, so check before you build.
